■ Hakuya Noguchi Studio and Leaf and Lacquer Art
Since its founding in 1877, Hakuya Noguchi Studio has been producing specialty yarns for kimono sashes (obi) in Kyoto’s legendary Nishijin weaving district. These yarns include such items as gold yarn as well as highly refined hikihaku weft yarn. Hikihaku is a world-renowned process that begins with large complex graphic designs made from precious metal leaf (gold, silver or platinum) affixed to Japanese washi paper with lacquer which is sliced into very narrow strips to be later woven into silk, resulting in luxurious metallic fabrics.
In addition to their work in traditional textiles, both metal leaf masters Yasushi Noguchi (4th generation) and his son Takuro apply their centuries-old skills to creating hakuga, contemporary art works combining metal leaf with natural lacquer (tree sap).

◆Yasushi Noguchi
The 4th generation master artist of Hakuya Noguchi Studio has spent his entire adult lifetime designing and producing the metallic background for obi weavers in Kyoto’s Nishijin district. During a visit to the studio, Yasushi explains and demonstrates the time-honored, step-by-step hikihaku process, his family’s specialty for 150 years. Additionally, he shares the fascinating story of how Japanese artists created metallic leaf as backdrops for masterpiece paintings from the 1500’s through the 1800’s. The most famous examples of this are the gilded Iris screens by Ogata Korin, now found in the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Nezu Museum in Tokyo.

◆Takuro Noguchi
The 5th generation master, Takuro, has focused his career on creating contemporary hakuga works, combining the same skills inherited from his long family line with his own artistic sensibility. His works have been widely shown in Japan at solo shows and at art fairs, both domestically and overseas. Two of his larger, more dynamic works can be seen in the Tsutaya lobby at the Rohm Theater in Kyoto and the Panasonic Museum in Osaka. Please see his website http://noguchi-takuro.com for images of his works and a more detailed profile.

●Noguchi home and workshop
For several generations, the Noguchi family has been living and working in the same lovely Kyoto machiya (handcrafted tradesman’s house) that was built in 1887. Kyoto City has officially designated this authentically preserved wooden structure as a small, official museum, to provide education regarding the Nishijin weaving district and metal leaf craftsmanship. Within the house, you will find a small art gallery which features the contemporary leaf and lacquer hakuga works of both father and son.
Please come to experience this intimate old house and learn about this unique Japanese art style firsthand from the artist, while he shows you how the brilliance of precious leaf shifts with variations in light.
